Warped Wing & descendants of 111-year-old Dayton brewery launch new beer

For inspiration to help come up with their latest beer, the folks at Warped Wing Brewing Company looked back — WAY back.

The downtown Dayton brewery will pay homage to one of Dayton's early breweries, the Olt Brewing Company (later the Olt Brothers Brewing Company), which operated from 1907 to 1942 in the city (with a hiatus during Prohibition, of course, when it made distilled water and distributed dairy products). One of Olt's flagship beers was labeled "Superba," a name that Warped Wing has borrowed for its latest release, the "Superba Hoppy Pils."

Mother-versus-son restaurant lawsuit comes to an abrupt halt

At a party that starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 at the brewery and which will be attended by descendants of Olt Brewing Company’s founders, Warped Wing will unveil both draft and 6-pack cans of Superba Hoppy Pils. The new brew, which has 5.4 percent alcohol, is one in an ongoing seasonal Lager-style series being launched by the brewery this year.

“There is some remarkable beer history in Dayton,” Nick Bowman, Warped Wing’s vice president of sales and marketing and managing partner, said in a release. “We wanted to embrace that heritage, by resurrecting a Dayton beer name from the past while putting a contemporary spin on the beer recipe.”

What does the Olt family of today think of this idea? We asked Kurtis Olt, the first cousin once removed from Charles Olt, who ran the namesake brewery for most of its existence.

“Our family is thrilled and honored that Warped Wing is recognizing Dayton breweries of a bygone era by naming its most recent craft after one of our family’s beers,” Olt said.

Olt said Charles Olt’s daughter, who lives in Florida, is planning on coming to Dayton for the release. “I expect that several other family members will also be attending along with numerous friends,” he said.

The beer will be released to the retail market next week, Warped Wing’s Bowman said.

Can’t make that release?

Pirogue, a collabortion between Warped Wing and Wood Burl Coffee (the same folks at Press Coffee), will be released on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the brewery. The launch party and bottle release begins at noon and goes until 12 a.m.
