2021 called a ‘historically’ quiet year for severe storms, tornadoes so far

On Thursday, as the Miami Valley saw another mild, calm day, the National Weather Service in Wilmington pointed out that this year has been an exceptionally quiet year for severe storms and tornadoes.

According the NWS, so far this year it has only issued eight severe thunderstorm warnings and no tornado warnings. As of mid-April, that is the fewest to start the year since 2004.

In 2004, there were six total combined severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings.

The NWS said this year has by far the fewest of these warnings to start the year since then, especially with 165 total warnings issued by May 12 in 2011, 135 by this that date in 2012 and 118 by then in 2017.
