State announces 2022 Winter Hike Challenge, New Year’s Day events

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has announced its 2022 Winter Hike Challenge, tasking hikers with participating in hikes at state parks in three different areas of Ohio this winter.

ODNR is also hosting First Day Hikes at trails, including Hueston Woods State Park and Shawnee State Park.

To complete the challenge, hikers have to download the DETOUR Ohio Trails App, then go on hikes at state parks in three of the five regions of Ohio between Jan. 1 and March 1.

The ODNR release said the first 500 people to complete the challenge will receive a free Ohio State Parks Winter Hiker sticker.

A map of the regional and state parks in each region are available on the ODNR’s winter hike website, where hikers can also send in their information and apply for the sticker.

Before hitting the trail, though, the ODNR said to check the forecast, research the hike and tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return.

Then, while on the trail, it said to dress in layers that keep your head, neck and hands covered, stay hydrated and take snacks.

Along with the challenge, ODNR has set up New Year’s Day events to encourage residents to hit the trails Saturday.

At Shawnee State Park, a 1 p.m., a one-mile hike will be followed by hot cholate and cookies at the state park lodge fireplace. Those who attend are asked to meet inside the lobby.

At 2 p.m. at Hueston Woods State Park, a naturalist will be at the nature center and people who attend can take a hike through the woods.

Trails throughout Ohio are hosting events Saturday. For more information, visit OhioDNR.gov.
