Council approves new Oakwood Athletic Complex

Oakwood City Council approved the facility design of the Oakwood Athletic Complex on Monday night.

The multi-million dollar privately funded facility will be built on what is now the parking lot of the Old River Sports Complex.

“Right now we have the project out to bid, so the different contractors and subcontractors are getting together to figure out what those bids should be so they can make presentations to us,” said Oakwood City Schools Superintendent Kyle Ramey.

The bids are due April 12, and project leaders hope to break ground yet this spring, Ramey added.

Oakwood Athletic Project, the group fundraising for the construction of the complex, raised just shy of $3 million as of last month and has now surpassed $3 million, Ramey said. The group's original goal was $2.5 million.

The complex, which will be operated and managed by Oakwood City Schools, will feature an athletic turf field and be used primarily for field hockey, lacrosse, soccer and track and field.

Plans also include bleacher seating for 1,000, a building containing restrooms and a concession stand, a parking lot and fencing.

The building could also include locker rooms and storage depending on cost, Ramey added.

“It just gives us some options for students rather than having to be rained out all the time and, sometimes in the winter, to be able to get out and on those nice days like we had this winter, for us to just be able to get out and practice and play,” Ramey explained.

Construction on the facility is expected to be completed in late fall 2016 or spring 2017.
