Star Wars actor Mark Hamill and musician Trent Reznor are throwing their support behind a crowdfunding effort to create a documentary about the 1990s Dayton band "Brainiac."

“I NEED TO SEE THIS!,” Hamill posted to his verified account on Twitter.

“These guys were great,” noted a Tweet from Reznor, vocalist for Nine Inch Nails who has cited the Dayton band as an influence on his music.

Hamill added on his verified Facebook account: “The Hamill boys are ALL IN!”

The deadline for donations for the “3RA1N1AC” film is May the Fourth – “(hmmm…why does that ring a bell?)” Hamill wrote on Twitter.

The Kickstarter campaign was launched by Eric Mahoney, a Dayton native now working as a filmmaker in New York.

Mahoney said by phone Thursday that Reznor, and Hamill’s son Griffin, were huge Brainiac fans. The fact that the campaign ends on Star Wars day was “purely coincidence.”

“For their time, (Brainiac) was certainly one of the well-known indie rock bands and toured extensively all over the U.S. and had a good fan base,” he said. “I was certainly a huge fan of their growing up and had seen them in high school.”

He outlines the indie rock band's tragic story on the Kickstarter page: noting it released three full-length albums and was on the verge of national ascendance with their innovative sound when front-man Tim Taylor was killed in an auto accident.

“I think Tim was an absolute genius,” he said. “This is hopefully a way to bring their music to a new audience.”

Mahoney said one of his goals in the film is to tell the world about Dayton’s influence on the national music scene, producing other bands such as Zapp, The Ohio Players, The Breeders and Guided by Voices.

“In the mid 90’s the Dayton music scene became a hot spot generating world wide buzz from the massive amount of influential indie rock being produced there,” the Kickstarter page says. “Arguably the most innovative of them all was the band Brainiac, led by musical genius and insanely charismatic front man Tim Taylor.”

This isn’t the only time Mark Hamill has repped Dayton. Remember when his son wore this University of Dayton shirt in the Millennium Falcon?!

Um, is Mark Hamill's son wearing a University of Dayton tshirt?!
