9 movies that have been filmed in southwest Ohio

Scenes from Dayton and southwest Ohio have shown on movie screens throughout the years without some even knowing. The latest, “The Old Man and The Gun” starring Robert Redford, is now showing in theaters.

Here are some notable movies that have been filmed in the region: 

Filmed in 2007

True Nature

“True Nature,” a supernatural thriller, was filmed entirely in the Dayton and Springfield areas and produced by two Wright State University graduates. 

The film, which premiered in 2010, was played at more than 40 festivals around the world and is available on DVD and streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.

Filmed in 2011

Ides of March

“Ides of March,” a political drama starring George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, filmed at Miami University in Oxford. The film, which opened in 2011, prominently features Oxford in the first 20 minutes with scenes taking place in Hall Auditorium.

Filmed in 2014

Miles Ahead

Actor and director Don Cheadle filmed at the former Dayton City Jail for the Miles Davis biopic “Miles Ahead.”

Several scenes that appear in the movie were shot in the Dayton and Kettering areas for the story about Davis, the legendary jazz musician.

Filmed in 2015

The Long Home

The several-week shoot for James Franco’s “The Long Home” filmed in several southern Ohio locations, including Eaton in Preble County, Camp Kern in Warren County and around North Second Street of Hamilton’s Historic German Village.

Two days of filming also occurred just outside of Hamilton’s city limits in more rural woods and river areas.

The movie, set in the 1940s in rural Tennessee, is expected to premiere in 2017.

Mickey Rourke’s boxing movie, “Tiger,” filmed in Hamilton and surrounding areas for nearly a month. The cast and crew utilized the Hamilton High School gymnasium, weight room area, locker rooms and football stadium, according to Larry Knapp, business manager for Hamilton City Schools. 

The movie is scheduled for a November 2018 release.

The western film “Calamity Jane’s Revenge,” filmed entirely in New Lebanon, was directed by local filmmaker Henrique Couto. 

The film was released on Sept. 25, 2015 and is available on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.

Dayton-based actress Erin R. Ryan stars in "Calamity Jane's Revenge." CONTRIBUTED

The Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated movie “Carol” filmed in parts of Hamilton, Lebanon and Cincinnati. The Kostas Restaurant in downtown Hamilton even has a sign saying “Carol was filmed here.” 

The movie, featuring stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, premiered in the U.S. on Jan, 15, 2016.

The Lifetime movie “Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge, & Michel’le,” transformed downtown Middletown into 1978 southern California. 

The film depicts R&B artist Michel’le’s journey from the streets of Compton, including her experience with Death Row Records and her relationships with founders Dr. Dre and Suge Knight, according to executive producer Leslie Greif.

Filmed in 2017

The Old Man and the Gun

“The Old Man and the Gun,” a bank robbery movie set in the 1970s, filmed on Main Street and at the Liberty Tower in downtown Dayton. 

The movie, starring Robert Redford, Danny Glover, Casey Affleck and Sissy Spacek, premiered in Dayton on Oct. 11.
