Vegas allows parking scofflaws to 'pay' tickets with school supplies

Schools need supplies and parking tickets need to be paid. So why not kill two birds with one stone?

The Las Vegas City Council has come up with a unique way to not only punish those who break the law when they park their car but also get the notebooks, pens and pencils that students and teachers need.

Until July 19, those who have unpaid parking tickets can bring new, unwrapped school supplies that are of equal or greater value of their fine to the Parking Services Offices within 30 days of the citation date and have the ticket considered paid.

The donations will go to the Teachers Exchange, a nonprofit associated with the Public Education Foundation. The items will be distributed to classrooms in the Clark County School District, The Las Vegas Sun reported.

Accepted school supplies include:

  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Erasers
  • Dry erase markers
  • Index cards
  • Paper towels
  • Disinfecting wipes
  • Card stock
  • Copy paper
  • Storage bins
  • Rulers
  • Scissors
  • Pencil sharpeners
  • Post-it notes

Along with the supplies, and the parking ticket, the donations must have the purchase receipt with the items.

Nonpublic safety citations are eligible for the ticket program.
