New restaurant to open today in Troy

An independently owned, full-service restaurant is poised to open today, Nov. 1 in Troy’s Treasure Island Park overlooking the Great Miami River.

Smiths' Boathouse Restaurant, 439 North Elm St., has a seating capacity of about 150 and employs 20 to 25, according to co-founder Larry Smith. It serves dinner six days a week, closed Sundays. The restaurant had a "soft opening" last week.

Smith’s brother Ron Smith Jr., also a co-founder of Smiths’ Boathouse Restaurant, operated The Waterfront restaurant on Maui in Hawaii for 23 years, until it closed in 2012.

Smiths’ Boathouse specializes in seafood and steaks, prepares a table-side Caesar salad, and will offer rotating menu specials, Smith said. The restaurant has a full liquor license, and has an extensive wine and craft-cocktails list, as well as four beer taps.

Plans call for adding Sunday brunch, Smith said.

The restaurant is housed in space that was built as a boathouse in 1946 as part of Treasure Island Park on the Great Miami River. A new lighthouse and band shell are part of a revitalization of the park in recent years.
