Tennessee woman waiting in Krystal drive-thru killed by stray bullet

Knoxville police said the shot came from the parking lot of The Vibe nightclub, WBIR reported.

Jessie Roberts, 25, was in the drive-thru of a Krystal restaurant in Knoxville about 4 a.m. Sunday when a bullet pierced the passenger side door and hit her in the stomach, the newspaper reported.

According to Knoxville police, the shot came from the parking lot and the street in front of The Vibe nightclub, located a couple of blocks down and across the street from the Krystal, located at 2815 N. Broadway.

"Witnesses reported seeing cars speeding away from the club and numerous people shooting in the parking lot and the area around The Vibe," the Knoxville Police Department said in a news release Monday.

Roberts had not been to the club that night, according to her brother, Nathaniel Roberts. The woman had been attending a performance at the Knoxville Center and decided to get some food, the News Sentinel reported.

"That’s the hardest part of it all," Nathaniel Roberts told the newspaper. "We can’t make sense of it. It’s just the wrong place at the wrong time. They were just trying to get some food."

Jessie Roberts was taken to an area hospital, where she died, the News Sentinel reported. She leaves behind a 7-year-old son. Two other people came to an area hospital, claiming to have been shot at the nightclub, the newspaper reported. Their injuries were non-life-threatening.

It is the second fatal shooting near The Vibe this year, WBIR reported. A man died on New Year's Day after he was shot at the club.

More than 50 spent shell casings were found in the parking lot of the nightclub and the street in front of it, WBIR reported.

"The neighbors are pretty concerned, rightfully so, about stray bullets," Knoxville city commissioner Lauren Rider told the television station. "City Councilwoman for North Knoxville. "I've been talking to city staff about what it takes to get a club like this shut down."
