El Meson brings back its beloved Tapas Week, but this time there’s a twist

Imagine sitting by the beach, as the waves crash against the coastline, while you sip on a refreshing Gin & Tonic and nibble on figs wrapped in prosciutto.

One of Dayton's most popular restaurants will transport your taste buds to the Basque region of Spain for a week-long celebration of the Pintxos. You may remember this uniquely Mediterranean dining experience from years past as El Meson's Spanish Tapas Week. This year it will start on Wednesday, Feb. 5 and last until Saturday, Feb. 8.

“Though tapas are now familiar to many diners, we really wanted to immerse our guests in the dining experience of Pintxos from Basque, the northern region of Spain,” Bill Castro, owner of El Meson, said. “This event is all about a leisurely evening of wonderful food, drinks and company.”

As part of the dining experience, there will be a mix of small bites you can grab at the bar, including crostinis, spreads and artisan olives, as well as continual offerings from the kitchen. “Take only what you like and our servers will keep track of your tab for you as you go,” according to the Facebook event listing.

“In addition to delicious small bites available at the bar, we’ll also be offering wine and drink specials, including our new GinTonics and PorTonics, a real treat,” Castro said.

Seating for this culinary adventure is limited and structured to create an environment and to be able to accommodate the special tapas menu and drinks specials for the guests.

For those interested in attending Pintxos and Tapas of Spain, the event takes place Feb. 5-8, with seatings at 5:30 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and 5:30, 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Reservations require a non-refundable deposit of $10 per person, but that will be applied to your bill at checkout.

With its own menu, Tapas Week features a number of specialty small and medium plates that are perfect to be shared at a table.

“Modern life can be so hurried and impersonal,” Castro said. “Take the time to be present with those around you for an evening of laughing and sharing.”
