Coronavirus: The best Dayton-area restaurants delivering now on Door Dash

Restaurants are open for delivery or carryout only.

Many Dayton-area restaurants are responding to Gov. Mike DeWine’s order to shut down their dining rooms due to the coronavirus threat by ramping up their carryout and delivery options, and some are launching curbside service as well.

While some restaurant delivery services have been around for many years, DoorDash, a national company founded in 2013, has been a game changer.

DoorDash was founded with a mission of enabling every merchant to deliver. What sets this company apart from others like Grubhub and Seamless, is that DoorDash hires its own drivers — known as “Dashers” — which allows restaurants that don’t have their own drivers to offer delivery.

While you are hunkering down under self-quarantine, what do you do if you have a hankering for a pizza from Marion’s or Milano’s. Or how about when the entire family feels like some comfort food from Palermo’s? These local restaurants and many others partner with DoorDash and can arrange delivery of any item on their menus to your door.

Depending upon where you live, you could have a choice of dozens of local restaurants from which to order your next meal or late-night snack. With more people working from home, staying home with children out of school or daycare, or taking time off because of family illness, ordering food for delivery may end up becoming a key part of meal planning.

IS IT SAFE?

Is it safe to get food delivery from local restaurants? What precautions are the “Door Dashers” taking to ensure cleanliness?

A DoorDash spokesperson said the company is actively working on strategies to protect the health and safety of communities nationwide. The DoorDash app even has a built-in feature to allow customers to leave special instructions for the Dasher.

“We have provided and will continue to share the latest public health guidance to consumers,” said Becky Sosnov, direct of PR & communications for DoorDash. “To reduce risk of transmission of the corona virus, we are reminding our community in affected delivery areas to use the instruction feature in the app, enabling requests for food to be left at a designated area, and a photo of the area to be sent.”

The company is also testing enhanced drop off options for “contactless delivery” and anticipate these to be rolled out shortly. All Dashers are also being provided with hand sanitizers and gloves.
