SWEET SURPRISE: This is Ohio’s favorite holiday cookie

America’s fondness for sweets tends to peak around the holiday season.

For many families, this love of sweets becomes a family affair during the holidays as they bake batches of cookies and pies together to share with one another at gatherings large and small. Though this indulgence in sweets may be more of a solitary practice this year, there is one constant that is likely to remain the same: America’s love of sweet treats.

Over the past month, Instagram has set out to find which holiday cookies are the most popular in every state. They were able to glean this by analyzing the number of likes and mentions of eight different cookies - peanut butter, shortbread, crinkle, oatmeal, sugar cookies, gingerbread, snickerdoodles and classic chocolate chip - over the previous month on in-feed and Instagram Story posts.

From this data, Instagram was able to conclude that peanut butter cookies are the favorite in Ohio, as well as in several other states, including West Virginia, Washington, Nevada, Minnesota and Louisiana. Kentucky and Michigan embraced oatmeal cookies as their favorites, while Indiana went for shortbread. Somewhat surprisingly, only one state, Illinois, claimed the classic chocolate chip cookie as its favorite holiday treat.
