Coronavirus: Hooters lays off 134 workers in 4 Ohio locations

More Dayton-area employers are reporting layoffs to the state.

Hooters of America LLC is laying off workers at a pair of area restaurants, 6851 Miller Lane off Interstate 75, and 9890 Escort Drive in Mason. Layoffs are also happening at Hooters locations in Toledo and Springdale, according to a WARN notice made public Thursday afternoon by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The action is expected to be permanent “based upon all available information,” Benjamin Benson, assistant general counsel for the Atlanta-based company, said in a letter to the state dated April 7.

Across the four locations, 134 Hooters workers are affected, but neither the Hooters letter nor the state offers a breakdown by location.

On-site dining and gatherings of more than 10 people have been banned by government edict during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also made public by the state Thursday, a Franklin manufacturer, Huhtamaki Inc., a consumer goods packaging company, said it was laying off 20 employees.

Those furloughs at the company’s 4000 Commerce Center Drive location will continue indefinitely but at this point it is thought they will be less than six months, Amy Peterson, a human resources executive for Huhtamaki, said in an April 8 letter to the city of Franklin.
