There literally will be a race to get St Patrick’s Day started in the Oregon District and it finishes with whiskey.

The Dublin Pub’s two-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration will kick off with a mile-long race through downtown Dayton on Monday, March 16. Registration and packet pickup begins at 4:30 p.m. with the race starting at 6 p.m.

"It's something we always wanted to do," Dublin Pub owner Steve Tieber said of the race, a partnership with Key Sports sponsored by Jameson. "It is a great way to kick off our event."

St. Patrick’s Day is Tuesday, March 17.

Registration for The Dublin Pub One Mile Run is $30 through Saturday, Feb. 29. It will cost $35 March 1-15 and $40 the day of the race.

The top prizes will include bottles of Jameson Whiskey, T-shirts and gift cards.

Each racer will receive an event logo T-shirt, finisher medal/drink glass, Jameson beads, a shot of Jameson or a drink, an event bib and entry into the Dublin Pub St. Patrick's Day party on March 16 and 17.

Regular admission to the party is $10 for both days.

The March 16 party will feature music spun by D.J. Jay Nigro and performed by the band Stranger.

Lines for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities begin at 4:30 a.m. the next day with breakfast served beginning at 5:30 a.m.

There will be entertainment throughout the day.

Tieber said this year's 6 p.m. St. Patrick Day toast to his father, the late Jay Tieber, and other who have passed will include recognition of the victims of the Aug. 4 Oregon District mass shooting.

The race will follow a Pound exercise class at 5 p.m., with a costume contest at the starting line just before 6 p.m.

Tieber said a portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Pink Ribbon Girls, an organization that helps women fighting breast and other cancers with meals, transportation and other services.

Tieber's wife, Suzie Tieber, is a breast cancer survivor.

“We are very lucky and very fortunate and we have seen a lot of people go through it,” he said of breast cancer.

Tieber said he is excited about what is to come in the Oregon District in March.

It will bring the return after eight years of the Big Hoopla, an Oregon District street party planned for Sunday, March 15.

That event kicks off NCAA First Four Division I Men’s Basketball Championship games at the University of Dayton.

“Everybody wants this time of year to be electric in Dayton,” he said. “It is a really exciting time. This is the place you want to be. It is going to be awesome.”
