Meet the tattoo artist: Josh Williams, Truth & Triumph

Not every image tattooed on skin is Josh Williams' favorite cup of tea.

But the tattoo artist at Truth & Triumph's location at 613 Watervliet Ave. in Dayton's Belmont neighborhood can appreciate craftsmanship.

The 9-year tattoo artist from Eaton says tattoos should have clean, solid lines and well-thought out layouts.

“As long as it is nicely done and it makes the person who is wearing it happy… that is what matters,” said the Englewood resident, who has thousands of designs under his belt. “As long as it is well done.”

Williams got his first tattoo at age 17 and his foot into tattooing through a friend who helped him get an apprenticeship at Blue Byrd Tattoo on Wayne Avenue in Dayton's South Park neighborhood.

He’s has worked at Truth & Triumph for seven years.

Williams encourages customers to research tattoo artists and truly think out their tattoo before getting work done.

“I’ve fixed and covered a lot of tattoos,” he said.

For a while there, he said, owl tattoos took over where the “tramp stamps” of the 1990s and 2000s left off.

Now-a-days, some female customers gravitate toward images they find on Pinterest or seek to copy tattoos worn by celebrities like Demi Lovato and Rihanna.

Quote tattoos are popular for collar bones and sides, he said.

Williams says he personally favors timeless tattoos over trendy ones, but says “to each his or her own.”

“I think it is pretty much an individual thing,” he said.
