A ribbon-cutting and grand-opening event is scheduled for this Friday, Oct. 18 in Centerville for a CBD oil store, and its founder says he is shooting to open as many as eight more shops in the Dayton area by the end of next year.

Rob McClure, a United States Marine Corp veteran, will open his first shop, called "Your CBD Store Centerville," at 5820 Wilmington Pike in the Sugarcreek Crossing retail center. The space previously housed VaporFi, a vapor shop, to which McClure has no connection.

A ribbon-cutting, in conjunction with the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, with a grand opening scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to the Dayton chamber's web site.

The store will sell SunMed products such as cannabidiol (CBD) oils, creams, edibles, capsules and skin care, and will offer products for pets as well as people. Proponents say the compound, found in the cannabis plant, has many medical benefits, although the substance has not been approved by the FDA to treat medical ailments.

Hemp plants from which CBD oil is derived do not contain significant quantities of THC, the psychoactive, "high"-producing compound that marijuana plants contain in impactful amounts. The Your CBD Store Centerville shop's motto, found atop its Facebook page, is, "Health without the high."

SunMed’s web site does, however, include the disclaimer that, “At no point can we guarantee that a false positive on a drug test will not occur,” because the difference between CBD oil and THC are difficult to distinguish in drug tests. “We do not recommend you take the product if this is a sensitive issue at your workplace,” the web site says.

The web site also says its products “are not intended for the cure, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man or animal.”

McClure, a former corporate recruiter who also has worked as a pipefitter, served in the USMC from 1993-97. He said he has spoken with dozens of customers of a CBD shop run by a friend in Pennsylvania, and they have reported relief from a variety of ailments after using CBD. The store owner himself is a customer.

“I used it, and I found relief,” McClure said. “I have less anxiety, and I have more patience. I handle things differently ... . Some veterans with PTSD say they can’t live without it.”

The Your CBD Store chain has grown rapidly. It opened more than 300 stores in its first 12 months, and has attracted franchisees who run nearly 400 additional retail outlets. By 2020, company officials say they expect  to have more than 1,000 Your CBD Stores across the country.
