Wot A Dog, at 603 S. Main St. in New Carlisle, has been a community icon for decades. But it was closed during the summer of 2015, reopened for part of 2016, then shut down again, its Facebook page suggests.

New owner Stephen Prechtl Jr. announced he had taken over the shop in July 2017 and promised in a Facebook post to restore the eatery to its glory days.

That announcement was warmly received by Wot A Dog fans.
“Rest assured that a lot of us appreciate that (you are) reopening for us!” one Facebook commenter said, calling Wot A Dog “one of the few (things) that keeps the spirit and heart in our little town alive and thriving.”

Another commenter said, “All I can say is that the first couple weeks you are open you had better have double staff. We have all been so excited to see it open , you will be packed from open to close. Best of luck and we will see you opening day.”

Prechtl could not be reached for comment late last week and over the weekend, but on the restaurant's Facebook page, he wrote that the resurrected drive-in restaurant will open with a limited menu, focusing on "the famous Coneys, the Wot A Burger (now made with fresh beef), Crinkle cut fries, Onion rings (best with our rebel sauce), root beer in a frosted mug, root beer floats, 1/2 gallon root beer, Dippin Dots (10 flavors), Chocolate and Vanilla Milkshakes … ." Coming soon, the owners said, will be a Rebel Burger, Texas Tenderloin, Curly Fries, and Chili Cheese fries.

Wot A Dog’s owners said on Facebook that they wouldn’t be taking call-in orders immediately upon the re-opening, “until we can efficiently take care of in-store business. Once we are comfortable, we will accept call-ins.”
