The Downtown Dayton Partnership hit the red carpet — sort of — for its recent promotional video.

Opening with the classic pottery scene in the movie “Ghost,” the late Patrick Swayze tells a giggling Demi Moore as she wrecks the spinning clay, “Oh no! You suck. I’ll buy you a pot from downtown.” Except, the voice is not Swayze’s, it’s a Downtown Dayton Partnership employee.

With not as many people shopping during these colder months of the year, Allison Swanson, DDP market manager, said DDP wanted to create something that was funny and grabbed people’s attention to promote downtown’s small businesses during their Valentine’s Day shopping season.

Just for laughs, but we're serious when we say you should support your local, small businesses in downtown Dayton for...

“The past year has been extremely difficult for our small businesses,” Swanson said. “Owners (and) managers weekly are wondering if they’re going to make it to the next week. So, we found it very important to help them in any way we can.”

During these challenging, somber times for small businesses, humor, in good taste, can be a useful tool for everyone.

“We want to be able to put a smile on (business owners’ and employees’) faces, knowing that this is something their customers are going to laugh about, but at the same time, kind of think in the back of their heads, ‘Oh yeah, I need to support local,’” Swanson said.

The short video shows stars from “The Notebook,” “The Princess Bride” and others seemingly proclaiming their love for Dayton brunch and “fancy downtown salons.” Bradley Cooper even tells Lady Gaga that he thinks “Downtown Dollars make a great gift.”

“We were nervous because we’ve been planning this for a few weeks now, and putting the video together we were like, ‘Are we the only ones who are going to think this is funny?” Swanson said, laughing.
