When I was a kid, Mother’s Day meant getting my mom whatever over-the-top tacky gift my father picked out and saying I “helped.”
Since there are roughly 1,300 miles between me and my parents these days -- and sometimes that’s a good thing -- I don’t get to take her out to brunch for Mother’s Day. That doesn’t mean I don’t know of a few great places to take Mom should she drop in unexpectedly.
If you’re fortunate enough to have your mom still in your life and near you, here are some great restaurants that are sure to be a hit.
613 E. 5th St., Dayton
This Oregon District hot spot’s Mother’s Day buffet features salads, hors d’oeuvres, sandwiches, quiche and platters from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Larger appetites will salivate over either the prime rib or ham with “smooshed” herbal potatoes and a vegetable medley as sides. Corner Kitchen didn’t leave out dessert, with parfaits, assorted cookies and brownies available. Reservations are recommended.
Cost: $24 per person ($14 for guests 11 and younger)
CARVER’S STEAKS & CHOPS
1535 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Centerville
Carver’s offers guests a three-course menu from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. where the main entree portion presents Mom with some tough choices. The prime rib Eggs Benedict is eye catching, but the tenderloin skillet, filet medallions in lobster cream sauce, raspberry salmon and steak and eggs -- featuring an 11-ounce New York strip -- may have you asking to share off your mom’s plate like you did as a kid...unless you never stopped. The dessert course is the intriguing Grand Marnier Chocolate Mousse. Reservations are suggested.
Cost: $30 (mimosas not included)
5 S. Market St., Troy
You can start this brunch buffet with a little more of a down-home feel, featuring things like scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, home fries, French toast, waffles with Bananas Foster. The carving station will have prime rib, country ham, grilled tilapia, rice pilaf and grilled chicken breast in mushroom sauce. A number of delicious salads and sides will also be available. Leave room for dessert, because you’ll have a selection of Chocolate Mousse, cookies, brownies and assorted cheesecakes. The brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call for reservations.
Cost: $27 ($14 for children and younger, age 5 and younger free)
130 W. Second St., Dayton
The restaurant has been fairly tight lipped about their Mother’s Day brunch menu thus far. However, they did announce on their Facebook site they will have a “twist on a Croque Madame". Costs were not available at press time, but the Table 33 did say they are down to a few spots available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are highly recommended.
4402 Walnut St., Beavercreek
Mimi’s Cafe at The Greene is doing things a little different for Mother’s Day with its three-course meal. Guests will have six main entrees to choose from, like the Chicken Tillamook Cheddar Mac, Quiche Lorraine and slow-roasted turkey. Dessert features a choice of their seasonal muffin sundae or the chocolate chip croissant bread pudding. Mom will also receive a special card just for her with wildflower seeds ready for planting. Guests who purchase two entrees and two beverages will receive a coupon for a free entree on their next visit (through May 28). Brunch begins at 11 a.m. and reservations are encouraged.
21 W. Main St., Versailles
This buffet will feature a fresh egg omelet station and baked tomatoes, as well as some of the usuals like French toast and eggs Benedict. Prime rib, apricot and cherry glazed ham and rosemary and garlic leg of lamb are just some of the drool-worthy options you’ll have to choose from. A bevy of salads and homemade desserts will also be served. Reservations are recommended.

19 E. Main St., Tipp City
One of the shining stars of Tipp City has quite the buffet menu this year. Highlights include the chicken waffle sliders, chocolate croissants and potato casserole. What caught our eye was the asparagus, roasted tomato and goat cheese frittatas. Make sure you don’t leave without trying the lavender honey cheese cake. Brunch hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and reservations are recommended.
1601 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Centerville
If buffets aren’t your thing, Bar Dumaine is offering up individual dishes à la carte, like their walnut raisin French toast with applewood smoked bacon or house-smoked Scottish salmon and asparagus quiche. Delicious sides include the homemade black pepper-sage sausage and their angel biscuit. The dessert menu includes a tempting creme crème brûlée. Bar Dumaine is taking reservations for groups of all sizes. Service begins at 11 a.m. and runs all day.

AMBER ROSE RESTAURANT
1400 Valley St., Dayton
This brunch has the whole family in mind with menu items geared towards both adults and children. Buffet offerings will include roast turkey, cabbage rolls, French toast bake and chicken and waffles. Kids may prefer the chicken tenders. The mouth-watering sides include potatoes O’Brien, smashed Yukon gold potatoes, mac and cheese, as well as salads and fruit options. The buffet runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and reservations are recommended.
Cost: $26 (adults), $10 (children 13 years old and younger)
