Local Elder-Beerman stores could close as early as today

“Merchandise and store items are selling out fast with current discounts as high as 90 percent off for the final weeks with limited exceptions,” Great American Group’s president of retail solutions Scott Carpenter said on Aug. 15. “Store closing dates vary depending on the volume of inventory that remains at each store.”

Sales are currently between 70 and 90 percent off plus an additional 25 percent off jewlery and 40 percent off everything else at checkout, according to Elder-Beerman’s Twitter account. The same account said stores will close either Sunday or Wednesday.

On Feb. 4, Bon-Ton and its subsidiaries filed for a court-supervised financial restructuring under Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. In April, the retailer announced it would liquidate its assets as part of the bankruptcy.

Last week, Carpenter said about 77 percent of merchandise had been liquidated.

Before the first round of closings, Bon-Ton employed about 24,000 people, including hundreds in the Dayton area. The company operated roughly 250 stores in 23 states under the Bon-Ton, Bergner’s, Boston Store, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s and Younkers brands.
