Turrets and towers: some of these Dayton landmarks are gone, but they live on in photos

Many of Dayton’s historic landmark buildings only exist in photographs.

1. Steele High School opened in 1891 along the Great Miami River and was reminiscent of a castle with turrets at each corner.

2. Dayton's first "skyscraper" was the Callahan Building.

As a young man, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar worked as an elevator operator in the building.
